They Were Not Duped By Trump. They Failed An Open Book Test.

The Evidence Was Public Before The 2024 Election

Before the 2024 election, the country already knew Trump lied about the 2020 election being stolen.

That was not a rumor. That was not a liberal talking point. That was not some secret file hidden in a basement. Trump pushed false election claims for years. His own side lost case after case. State officials, judges, election administrators, and even people inside his own administration rejected the idea that there was enough fraud to change the outcome.

Still, he kept saying it.

Not once. Not twice. For years.

Before the 2024 election, the country already knew Trump tried to overturn the 2020 election.

The January 6 Committee final report was public. The hearings were public. The testimony was public. The timeline was public. The pressure campaign was public. The fake elector scheme was public. The call to Georgia was public. The effort to get Mike Pence to reject lawful electoral votes was public.

This was not a hidden character flaw.

This was the plot.

Before the 2024 election, the country already knew Trump sat at the center of the storm that led to January 6.

People can argue about legal language all day. That is what lawyers are paid to do. But the moral reality was obvious. Trump told his supporters the election had been stolen. He told them the country was being taken from them. He told them to come to Washington. He told them it would be wild. Then he aimed that anger at Congress and his own vice president.

That is not complicated.

That is not subtle.

That is not a misunderstanding.

January 6 Was Not A Surprise Ending

January 6 was not a weather event. It did not blow in from nowhere.

It came from months of stolen election lies.

Police officers were beaten, sprayed, crushed, attacked, injured, and traumatized at the Capitol. Lawmakers ran. Staff hid. The vice president had to be rushed to safety while people outside chanted about hanging him.

That is not normal politics.

That is not a heated disagreement.

That is what happens when a president spends months convincing people that democracy has been stolen from them, then points them toward the building where the transfer of power is being certified.

And somehow we are supposed to believe smart media people, podcast hosts, political commentators, and public figures did not understand what Trump was?

Come on.

They understood enough.

They just decided it was useful to look the other way.

The Classified Documents Case Was Not Hidden Either

Before the 2024 election, the country already knew Trump was charged in the classified documents case.

The indictment was public. The photos were public. The allegations were public. The boxes were not some imaginary media invention.

The Justice Department indictment alleged that Trump kept classified documents after leaving office, including documents connected to national defense information.

Prosecutors also alleged obstruction.

They alleged he showed classified material to people who were not supposed to see it.

Again, none of this required a secret decoder ring. It was public record.

So when someone says they were duped, ask the obvious question.

Did you not know?

Or did you know and decide it did not matter?

Because those are two very different things.

The Criminal Charges Were Not Hidden

Before the 2024 election, Trump had been indicted in multiple criminal cases.

He had the New York criminal case.

He had the federal election case.

He had the classified documents case.

He had the Georgia election case.

People can debate each case. They can argue legal strategy. They can complain about prosecutors. They can say they thought some charges were political.

Fine.

But they cannot honestly say they did not know Trump was carrying a legal dumpster fire behind him into the election.

That was the whole point. He was not running despite the chaos. The chaos was part of the brand.

And plenty of people in media knew the chaos got clicks.

The New York Conviction Was Public

Trump went on trial in New York before the 2024 election and was convicted on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records.

The prosecution argued that the records were falsified to hide damaging information from voters during the 2016 election.

That matters because it was not just some private sex scandal. It was about deceiving voters.

So let’s not play dumb now.

The people saying they were shocked had access to the same information everyone else had.

They did not need to like Democrats to understand a felony conviction mattered.

They did not need to trust CNN to understand a jury verdict mattered.

They did not need to become liberals to understand that putting a convicted felon back into the presidency came with risk.

They just needed to care.

The Fraud Cases Were Public

Trump’s company was convicted in New York on tax fraud related charges.

Trump himself was found liable in a major New York civil fraud case involving inflated asset values. The massive penalty became its own legal fight later, but the underlying issue was still public before voters went to the polls.

This is where the “duped” excuse gets even weaker.

Trump did not enter politics as some monk who wandered out of the woods carrying a Constitution and a flashlight.

His entire public life was built around branding, exaggeration, lawsuits, stiffed contractors, tabloid drama, and self promotion.

This was the product label.

People bought it anyway.

The E. Jean Carroll Case Was Public

Before the 2024 election, Trump had already been found liable for sexual abuse and defamation in the E. Jean Carroll case.

A federal judge later clarified that the jury’s finding amounted to rape in the common meaning of the word, even though New York law used narrower legal definitions.

That distinction matters. We should be accurate.

But accuracy does not help Trump here.

The public record was still ugly. The jury finding was still public. The judge’s clarification was still public.

And that was after years of Trump bragging on the Access Hollywood tape that when you are famous, you can grab women.

Everybody knew.

They just made peace with it.

So What Exactly Was The Surprise?

That Trump lies?

Known.

That Trump attacks the courts?

Known.

That Trump attacks the press?

Known.

That Trump targets political enemies?

Known.

That Trump turns every serious issue into a loyalty test?

Known.

That Trump values personal loyalty over public service?

Known.

That Trump runs politics like a revenge business?

Known.

That Trump uses people until they are no longer useful?

Very known.

So what did these people discover now?

Did they discover that corruption is bad when their audience starts noticing?

Did they discover that authoritarian behavior is concerning when it becomes bad branding?

Did they discover that Trump is self serving only after the self service became too obvious to spin?

That is not being duped.

That is running out of excuses.

The Real Answer Is Access

Here is the uncomfortable part.

A lot of these people were not fooled.

They were rewarded.

Trump gave them access. Trump gave them attention. Trump gave them an audience. Trump gave them a lane. Trump made them feel like they were part of something bigger than normal politics.

For podcasters and media personalities, access is money.

A Trump interview brings clicks.

A Trump adjacent audience brings subscribers.

A Trump friendly posture brings relevance.

That does not mean every person who interviewed him supported everything he did. It does not mean every person who voted for him loved every scandal. But it does mean the incentives were obvious.

Being skeptical of Trump cost something.

Excusing Trump paid something.

And plenty of people made the calculation.

The “Duped” Excuse Protects The Wrong People

The problem with the “duped” excuse is that it makes powerful adults sound like helpless victims.

These are not confused teenagers reading their first ballot.

These are grown adults with platforms, researchers, producers, staff, money, experience, and influence.

They had more ability to check Trump than the average voter.

They had more time.

They had more resources.

They had more reason to be careful.

And they still helped normalize him.

So no, I am not handing out free sympathy coupons because someone finally noticed the building is on fire after helping stack the gasoline cans.

Buyer’s Remorse Is Not The Same As Being Duped

There is a difference between being tricked and regretting what you tolerated.

Being tricked means the truth was hidden.

Regret means the truth was available, but you ignored it.

That is where a lot of these people are now.

They are not saying, “We were wrong to ignore January 6.”

They are not saying, “We were wrong to minimize the election lies.”

They are not saying, “We were wrong to treat indictments, civil verdicts, fraud findings, sexual abuse liability, and threats to democracy as background noise.”

They are saying, “We were duped.”

That is easier.

It avoids the hard part.

Because the hard part is admitting they saw the evidence and decided it was not a deal breaker.

The Open Book Test

This is the part that matters most.

Trump did not hide who he was.

He campaigned as who he was.

He governed as who he was.

He posted as who he was.

He attacked as who he was.

He lied as who he was.

He threatened as who he was.

He promised revenge as who he was.

The country was not missing evidence.

The country was missing accountability.

And that includes the people with microphones who acted like asking basic questions was somehow unfair.

They were not duped by Trump.

They were seduced by usefulness.

Trump was useful when he attacked people they disliked.

Useful when he made cruelty sound like courage.

Useful when he turned politics into content.

Useful when he made conspiracy thinking profitable.

Useful when he gave them access to a massive audience.

Useful when the consequences landed on someone else.

Now some of them want to act shocked because the same machine they helped normalize is doing exactly what it always did.

Sorry.

That is not being duped.

That is failing an open book test and blaming the book.

The Evidence Matters

This is why The Evidence Matters exists.

Not because everyone has to agree on every policy.

Not because Democrats are always right.

Not because Republicans are always wrong.

Because adults with influence should not get to pretend public evidence did not exist when it becomes inconvenient later.

If the claim is true, show the evidence.

If the evidence was public, admit you ignored it.

If you promoted the lie, own it.

If you helped normalize the behavior, say so.

But do not insult the public by pretending Donald Trump was some mystery nobody could have figured out.

The record was there.

The warnings were there.

The court cases were there.

The indictments were there.

The jury verdicts were there.

The January 6 evidence was there.

The classified documents case was there.

The fraud findings were there.

The Access Hollywood tape was there.

The E. Jean Carroll verdict was there.

The Big Lie was there.

It was all there.

The only thing missing was the courage to care before it became personally inconvenient.
