Most people think social media is about connection and conversation. Under the hood, it is about attention. The systems that decide what you see are not judging truth. They are judging what keeps you on the screen. That simple rule explains a lot of what feels broken in our politics right now.

What an algorithm actually wants

When people say “the algorithm,” they are talking about ranking systems that decide which posts go to the top of your feed, which videos get recommended next, and which creators get amplified. These systems are trained to keep you engaged. If certain kinds of posts keep more people scrolling, similar posts get boosted.

Over time, platforms learned a hard truth. Calm, detailed information does not always keep people engaged. Outrage, fear, and moral conflict are powerful hooks. If a post makes people angry enough to comment, quote, or share, it looks “successful” to the system.

You may notice that the content you see most often is the content that makes you feel something strong. That is not an accident. When people feel shock, anger, or disgust, they interact more. They reply, fight, and share. The algorithm reads that as a win.

How division becomes a business model

Every platform needs money to survive. Most of that money comes from advertising or data tied to user activity. More attention usually means more revenue. If outrage keeps people online longer, then outrage becomes valuable inventory. Creators who learn how to trigger strong reactions are rewarded with reach.

This does not mean every engineer or employee wants division. It does mean the system rewards the type of content that divides people into teams and keeps them there. Over time, a lot of voices learn the same lesson. If you can keep your audience angry and afraid, the algorithm will keep sending you more of them.

What this does to your sense of reality

When you live inside a feed that quietly promotes the loudest and most extreme voices, your sense of what is normal can shift. You may start to believe that everyone on the other side is cruel or unhinged. You may assume that every headline is proof of a plot.

At the same time, slow information falls away. Court documents, long hearings, careful reports, and primary data almost never go viral in the same way. That does not mean they are less important. The first winners are platforms that can show high engagement numbers to advertisers. The second winners are influencers, pundits, and politicians who learn how to live inside the outrage cycle. If they can keep you mad, they can keep your attention, your clicks, and often your donations.

The losers are everyone who still needs a shared reality in order to make decisions. When people distrust any information that does not fit their feed, it becomes easier for bad actors to sell false stories and harder for honest reporting to cut through.

How to push back as a user

You cannot rewrite the code that runs the major platforms. You can change how much power it has over your own thinking. A few habits help.

  • Notice the emotion first. When a post makes you furious, pause for a moment. Ask yourself whether the content is designed to inform or to ignite.
  • Click through before you share. Read the article behind the headline. Watch more than a few seconds of the clip. See whether the claims are backed by any evidence at all.
  • Search outside the platform. If something sounds huge, look for coverage that links to court records, official data, or full transcripts, not just commentary.
  • Unfollow pure outrage accounts. If someone never corrects themselves and only posts content that attacks, consider muting or unfollowing. That is a quiet form of self defense.
  • Boost evidence based sources. Follow outlets and people who link to original documents and who update stories when they get something wrong.

Designing a calmer feed on purpose

Your feed is not a neutral window on reality. It is a reflection of what the algorithm thinks will keep you engaged. The good news is that your own choices train it. If you interact more with fact checks, primary source links, and long form reporting, and less with pure outrage, you send a different signal.

This is not about being passive. It is about choosing a different reward system. When you stay curious, ask for evidence, and avoid content that treats every story as a team sport, you build a feed that makes you stronger instead of more exhausted.

Bottom line: Algorithms are not neutral. When engagement equals profit, division becomes a product. You cannot turn off every system that thrives on anger, but you can refuse to be the easy customer.
